Who know’s what to do?

So many people purchase essential oils and then they sit and sit and sit because they just don’t know what to do with them.   The intention was there to be healthier, or to learn more, but… it just didn’t happen.   I often offer recipes on my website www.facebook.com/livingessentialsaroma  but many people are either afraid to try or really would like someone to show them.. one on one.   Getting people together in a party setting is getting harder and harder and in the age of the internet, many people buy everything online so its even worse as they don’t get the personal attention they need or to touch or feel or smell the product.   I am working on the concept of making customizable lotions, shampoos, oils, body butters etc to take the work out of it for my customers.  I am working with another company to get this done for the purest and safest oils, lotions etc to add the oils to and name them specifically for the customer.   I think this will be a better way to get people to use their oils as intended without letting their hard earned money fly out the window.

Having said all that… if you have any feedback on this concept, please let me know I welcome any feedback while in the development phase of this endeavor

give the audience what they want- focus on the issues – ACNE

So..I kinda took a break from the blogging so that I could learn more and speak more intelligently about what I’m actually writing about.   I have also polled some people and asked how they would like to learn about essential oils.   Turns out.. people would like to know the Issues that oils help and what oils help it more so than individual oils… go figure!  I wouldn’t have guessed it but as stated in the beginning… its a journey. So let’s start today with ACNE

Acne is something most people characterize with the puberty of adolescents and though this is true, many adults suffer from chronic acne, adult onset acne and the general pimple and blackhead issues of everyday living.

As you can see Claire is a mix of several single oils which makes for easier use.   Prior to knowing about Claire, I mixed lavender and tea tree oil with a carrier oil and though it worked just fine, having it all in one bottle is also convenient.

The single oils however have their own merit.  Lavender is great for all kinds of things.  It is often considered the “GO TO” oil because it has so many other uses.   Lavender is a key element in many blends for relaxation, headaches, pain, wound healing and the list goes on and on.  The smell is appealing and many people diffuse it just for the smell alone.

Tea tree oil (though not a fan of the smell) is also another additive in many blends involving the skin.   It also has antibacterial properties like lavender and has been used to help with not just acne but aids in wart removal, dandruff, wounds, corns and calluses and poison ivy.   Tea tree is mostly associated with skin ailments and injuries.

I have used and have many testimonials about all of these oils from everything from acne help, itching and relaxation.

Grapefruit Oil

grapefruitinfographicWhile on the Citrus kick with Wild Orange Oil.. I figured I would just roll into another citrus with Grapefruit oil.

I have what I can only describe as an obsession with learning as much as i can about essential oils, not only because they are rich in history, but as a clinical medical professional… I believe in integration and as a massage therapy student, I have witnessed the positive affects.. but I digress

As you can see by the picture (courtesy of Organic Facts) Grapefruit oil has many benefits.

Like the other citrus oils, it is a stress reliever and mood brightener, boosts the immune system with enabling healthy lymph function, good cleaning agent/disinfectant (for both house cleaning and wound cleaning), skin care benefits and muscle benefits.   The tricky almost contradictory portion of this picture is.. that is increases appetite… however it is also used to remove excess water and toxins promoting weight loss… grapefruit is often used in collaboration with other citrus oils to promote weight loss.

Like the other citrus oils, it is photosensitive so use caution when applying to skin that will be exposed to the sun.

The vast benefits of grapefruit oils boggles my mind, I will list some of the most popular uses and how to use it for those specific things.

Addiction-   Grapefruit oil aroma (diffused or inhaled) can help calm cravings of all sorts, food cravings, cigarettes, alcohol etc.  You get the point.   It is true that though citrus oils uplift the mood and increase positive emotions and energy levels, it also calms the nervous system reducing those cravings.   I add grapefruit, orange and lemon oils to my water to decrease sugar cravings… and it works!!!

Cellulite- Mixing 1-2 drops of grapefruit oil in a coconut oil and massaging in a kneading pattern every day will decrease the appearance of cellulite.   It is said that citrus oils help to metabolize fat collections.. which would make sense for this use.  I have known people who make a scrub with grapefruit for just this purpose.

Dry or itchy throat-   Grapefruit is known for its antiseptic properties as well so putting a drop into some water to gargle would be beneficial for any oncoming issues in the throat, adding a little coconut oil to the mix would create a lubricant for the dry scratchy feeling as well.

Fluid retention/edema-  mixing 1-2 drops with coconut oil and massaging towards the heart will help with this problem.  As stated above, grapefruit is good for removing excess water from your system.  Adding a drop to water you are drinking will do the same thing.

Adding a drop to water also helps with jet lag and hangovers and applying to the soles of the feet as proven beneficial for these issues as well as a boost to help with other issues listed here.

For kidney, liver and lymphatic support or cleansing, you would add to an unscented lotion or coconut oil and massage the lower abdomen and lower back for the kidneys, for the liver massage directly over the liver area and for the lymph system start with feet and hands and massage towards the heart

There are many more ways to use grapefruit oils.. adding to bath for de-stressing,  relieves PMS symptoms by massaging onto the abdomen and the list goes on and on

Grapefruit oil is also used a lot in blends for migraines caused by stress, weight management and digestive difficulties.

Grapefruit oil is said to not interfere with any prescriptions you are taking, however as always, bring it up to your doctor and do some research.

Wild Orange Oil

This oil is one of my new favorite oils.  I have been adding it to my water to help me drink more water, and have been finding now only do I drink more water but it reduced my sugar cravings.   This totally makes sense to me once I researched it.   1 drop of Orange oil is equal to approximately 1 lb of oranges… I wouldn’t attempt to eat a pound of oranges every time I drank a glass of water but, it turns out, i’m getting all the good stuff from oranges without the sugar which is an added bonus.

Wild Orange is said to have stronger properties that sweet orange or regular orange essential oils but all of the essential orange oils have similar properties.

According to Modern Essentials, wild orange is considered to be an anti-depressant (mood elevator), antiseptic, antispasmodic, helpful for digestion and has fat metabolizing properties that go along with digestion.

One thing about all of the citrus oils in using with the skin is that they are photosensitive… or basically react to the sun and cause blotchiness but if applied out of the suns rays (this can be for 12 hours after use, so use in areas not exposed to sun or use at night) can be very beneficial for the skin and digestive tract…

Usually orange is used for its emotional properties, lets face it the smell of orange brightens the moment, so it is often used in cleaning products, in diffusers and in skin products.   Lifting a mood can open up the more productive channels of your brain allowing you to get out of a rut and focus as well.

So  here is a use breakdown-

Anxiety – it has been tested that if you rub some orange oil between your hands and then smell your hands, it creates a calm for your nervous system slowing down your anxiety reactions.   Aromatically, the calming properties are endless when used in a diffuser, or as a car air freshener…

I’ve never tried this next one myself but i have seen it listed over and over as a use for orange oils… and that is for confidence.  It is stated that if you rub a few drops onto your stomach prior to any situation requiring confidence, that it will help you.

Constipation-  mixing 2 drops of orange essential oil with 2 drops of coconut oils in a circular pattern over your abdomen 2 times a day will help with constipation.  … and if diarrhea is an issue do the same thing in a counter circular fashion

Heart palpitations- (benign)  diffusing orange oil can help with calming down the heart but also putting a few drops of orange oil on your chest helps the nervous system normalize reducing the added impulses to the heart causing palpitations

As you know the vitamin C in citrus aids in immune support for combatting colds and such, diffusing orange oil in your house has the same effect.

During menopause, orange has been found to help with regulation of hormones by putting 1-2 drops at the base of the neck and front of the neck.   You can also mix orange and peppermint oils to help with hot flashes, though on a personal level, i used yam extract which was amazing for hot flashes.

I have also read, and experienced that mixing orange, lemon and grapefruit essential oils help with weight loss through metabolizing fat better and it is also know to be mixed with lemongrass oil to help lower cholesterol.

I’m not a doctor obviously so if you are using essential oils to treat a medical condition, please do your research and bring it up to your doctor.

Lavender Oils

I want to go through oils individually to educate people on the uses, benefits, side effects and just overall information regarding essential oils… particularly today… Lavender.

I started with one of the most known, most popular and most used oils because those that are already using lavender oil are probably using it for a specific need but there is so much more to lavender oil.

I also started using lavender for a specific need.. relaxation and headaches.  I have since become aware of many other uses and I have integrated them into my daily life.

It is true that lavender does help with relaxation and headaches but to break it down further, it helps eliminate nervous tension, disinfect, aid in blood circulation, relieve pain, open the respiratory tract and treat respiratory problems and so much more.

Lavender Essential oil is a natural bug repellent, it is particularly effective on mosquitos and flies as well as has anti-inflammatory qualities that reduce the effects of a bug bite.  Lavender is one of the oils that can be applied directly to the skin and also through a carrier oil and is effective either way.

Lavender as talked about earlier is a relaxation “helper” which helps to induce sleep.  This can be used in a linen mist or by adding lavender to a diffuser or directly to pressure points.

On that same track, lavender is used to calm nervous system issues(migraines, stress, muscle ticks) and anxiety by relaxing the nervous system.  Studies have also shown that inhaling lavender can also cause increased cognitive function when mixed with rosemary.

Lavender is a natural antibacterial as well which allows it to help with acne problems, respiratory issues caused by viral and bacterial colds, flu, infections etc.  Adding a small amount of lavender to unscented skin creams or ointments and increase relief and healing of acne, wounds or sores while inhaling, vaporizing or adding to a cream can increase the respiratory function.

Many people use their feet as a means for getting lavender or any essential oils into the system quicker as circulation carries it from there to the top of the body quickly.

Lavender as noted earlier in this post can be used as a bug repellent, this included lice, but it is very useful for the hair in general.  Ingrown hairs, hair loss and growing stronger hair can be helped by adding lavender to a shampoo or putting it directly on the scalp.

The skin gets great benefits from lavender due to its anti-inflammatory properties.   It has been added to other oils to treat eczema and stand alone or with vitamin E or coconut oil to treat dry skin, scars, cuts and sunburn.

I have used lavender in lemonade and ice cream and other recipes, however, many sites will state that ingesting lavender oils could be harmful, so for safety purposes you may want to use lavender plant stems for cooking or baking needs.  It is a personal choice.  If you choose to use lavender oils, or my suggestion is any oils, dilute them prior to ingesting.

Lavender Lemonade

  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup dried lavender
  • ice, for serving

Lavender Coconut Ice Cream

2 cups heavy whipping cream
2 cups coconut milk
3 tablespoons culinary lavender
8 egg yolks
1 ¼ cup lavender sugar

Funny what you didn’t know you knew

Funny how you didn’t know you knew things…. I know this sounds like a funny statement, but this is where I am in my Journey to Essential Oils.   Its strange to me, how some things just keep coming back to us as if nudging us to rediscover, or pay attention to it.   I’m not a huge proponent of “fate” so to speak, but call it coincidence or what you will…Essential oil keeps nudging me

I grew up in a country family of a mix of clinical medical practitioners and homeopathic practitioners and chiropractors… and then my grandma.   Now Grandma was the one who had all the home remedies, which I didn’t know at the time, were basically my first taste of essential oils.   We grew up with a clear understanding that integrated medicine was not only practical but beneficial.   I trusted and adopted many of my Grandma’s “home remedies” as my own and practiced them my whole life, not really thinking it was Essential Oils.   How does that happen???  We used sweet oil for ear aches, lavender for scrapes, headaches and sunburn, peppermint for stomach problems along with “flat coke” and the list goes on and on.   As part of my normal life, I just used what I knew as I always had and continued on.

Now… fast forward to 20 years ago, when I had my first massage experience when my massage therapist sat me down with a box of oils and a bowl of coffee beans and told me to take my time, smell the oils, cleanse my nose with the coffee beans and then pick three that appeal to me… this was hands down the beginning of my interest in essential oils for aromatherapy purposes.  I delved into what smells made me feel a certain way and how I could use candles to adapt and shape my moods and emotions and I was hooked on candles.   I came to find that these smells evoked memories and created a sense of safety through my candles.  The connection between smells and memories, moods and emotions is really a strong one.   Think about what your favorite smell is and I can almost count on the fact that there is a memory attached to it.   Just like driving along and hearing a song on the radio and it reminding you of something that was in your past whether that was a good memory or a bad one.  Our minds connect our special senses (sight, hearing, smell and touch) with all kinds of memories and we expand upon those by either pulling them closer to us by surrounding ourselves by these things or distancing ourselves from them.   Either way, we can’t deny the connections to sights, sounds, smells and feeling that evoke memories for us.   Again.. I sort of digressed….

I am in fact a clinical medical professional, I teach clinical medical classes and though homeopathic medicine has come a long way in the past 10 years with integrating into the clinical medical genre, there is still a long way to go.   I kept feeling as if I was missing the boat with the homeopathic/natural avenues of medicine and was doing a disservice to my students by not knowing more about natural means of treatments.   So… I started taking the massage therapy licensing classes.   During this process, I was re-introduced to the value of smells and uses for essential oils to not only set the mood during massage but to also help with different issues of the body while doing massage.   I used various oils to keep the client from developing sinus issues while in the prone position to start my massages, and then added oils to their massage creams to work for various issues that they may be having, everything from muscle soreness to headaches to joint problems and so on.   From there, I started wanting to know more, now like I said, I have used various oils throughout my whole like, I’ve treated my husbands headaches with lavender, his earaches with sweet oils, we have kept toothaches at bay till a dentist could see us with clove oil and yet… I still didn’t realize I was using aromatherapy/essential oils… I’m not a someone who usually misses such obvious things, but I guess when it is part of  your life as a regular thing, you just don’t think of it as anything but a standard for what has been taught to you.

I started taking free webinars and classes anywhere and everywhere I could just to find out as much as I could, I went to every direct marketing party with essential oils I was invited to just to get more information, and… I researched and researched, and researched.

Though I already knew that the things my grandmas taught me were tried and true, I have since found out the reasons why they work and what else they work for.

Don’t get me wrong, the clinical medical professional in me, still believes that medicines are important but the other side of my upbringing reminds me that all medicines were based upon essential oils and plants since long before the synthetic versions were brought to be.   I believe that if you are going to use essential oils that you should be informing your doctor as to the what, but how much and for what you are using them for as to not cause any adverse reactions and possible over consumption.

In my following blogs, I will be putting down the individual uses and benefits of essential oils from the research I have done and hopefully we will be able to continue the Journey to Essential Oils together.
